<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last week I had the opportunity to sit down with Wataru Kami, concept artist that's worked on such projects as Street Fighter V. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While having coffee with him he told me about the new tool he had created, the BrushKnob. BrushKnob was designed because Kami-San wanted a way to speed up his workflow. Often time when digital artists and photographers are working in Photoshop they have to switch back in forth between their pen tablet and keyboard. BrushKnob was invented so that you wouldn't be searching your keyboard, and instead have access to the tools you need immediately in your hand.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VDZUM27WBaY/V141r_uxcoI/AAAAAAAAasI/EAau4R6zkYAy0yw3HdwGYS2w6IS4cI4AwCLcB/s1600/brushknob_by_wataru_kami_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="204" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VDZUM27WBaY/V141r_uxcoI/AAAAAAAAasI/EAau4R6zkYAy0yw3HdwGYS2w6IS4cI4AwCLcB/s320/brushknob_by_wataru_kami_1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I pulled out my laptop and gave the tool a try. I was immediately surprised at how quickly my computer setup the device. Without needing any extra drivers I just plugged in the USB cable and I was ready to rock. <br />
<br />
Unfortunately the computer I had with me for the day didn't have Photoshop on it, so instead I opened up Lightroom. The integration was great. With each turn of the knob I could not only see my brush increasing or decreasing in size, but could also feel it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-c-56IZf7Xuo/V141sbAfURI/AAAAAAAAasc/vHB0ClXQEics_SPSoVREOfnqo9Ou56NbgCLcB/s1600/images.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-c-56IZf7Xuo/V141sbAfURI/AAAAAAAAasc/vHB0ClXQEics_SPSoVREOfnqo9Ou56NbgCLcB/s1600/images.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I borrowed another computer that had Photoshop on it and found that the button would switch back and forth between my brush tool and my eraser tool. Kami-San explained to me how he wanted to keep the tool simple, and that it was. But the ability to feel your tools gave me more control, and did actually speed up my workflow.<br />
<br />
The device is designed to work with Adobe programs, so if you wanted to use it with other programs like CaptureOne or Gimp then you'll probably need to remap some of your keys. But overall a great little device with immediate response time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-61zGpwmlmg4/V141rwNsrcI/AAAAAAAAasU/IXlMlIn-IcEe3wUKUH-Z4xqRf8leEEfRQCLcB/s1600/BKWithBlender.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="160" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-61zGpwmlmg4/V141rwNsrcI/AAAAAAAAasU/IXlMlIn-IcEe3wUKUH-Z4xqRf8leEEfRQCLcB/s320/BKWithBlender.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Kami-San is currently raising funds on <a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/brushknob-speed-up-your-creation-workflow#/" target="_blank">IndieGogo</a> to support the launch of the BrushKnob. He had decided to launch on IndieGogo rather than other crowdfunding sites because he's based out of Japan, and more Japanese people are familiar with IndieGogo than others like Kickstarter.<br />
<br />
The campaign has a little over two weeks left and is offering low introductory prices for those interested in the device. You can see more at <a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/brushknob-speed-up-your-creation-workflow#/" target="_blank">IndieGogo</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NqCG2j1NJgw/V141r0ISu9I/AAAAAAAAasM/8wsQ3tF3Vq4eMNdrqjT9GISF37-iZTm0gCLcB/s1600/DSC0477s_bzmewx.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="160" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NqCG2j1NJgw/V141r0ISu9I/AAAAAAAAasM/8wsQ3tF3Vq4eMNdrqjT9GISF37-iZTm0gCLcB/s320/DSC0477s_bzmewx.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I recommend the BrushKnob for any graphic artists and photographers that want to not only increase their workflow, but also want to return to that physical feeling of art when working with digital mediums.<br />

<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AkcqGJB_avk/V1FSBfPWCPI/AAAAAAAAaqg/rP9sCWSSQksJIwSPJx1Lkvb-JBv9cjB1QCLcB/s1600/_MG_0633.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AkcqGJB_avk/V1FSBfPWCPI/AAAAAAAAaqg/rP9sCWSSQksJIwSPJx1Lkvb-JBv9cjB1QCLcB/s320/_MG_0633.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Being based out of Tokyo I am always moving. Japan has an amazing public transportation
system that I take full advantage of. As
a portrait and travel photographer I always have to be ready to go. Carrying gear from shoot to shoot can be
extremely tiresome, so portability is very important to me. Throughout my career I’ve been constantly
replacing gear to find things lighter and easier to carry in order to make
things easier for me. <a href="http://amzn.to/1srukWL" target="_blank">The Befree</a> tripod
became the definition of what I look for in all my gear.<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The compact
size of the Befree tripod was the first thing to appeal to me. By folding everything in I was able to reduce
the size to about fifteen inches. The
size was so small that I could easily put it in my suitcase. This allowed me to carry most of my gear in
my carry on suitcase ensuring I had speedy disembarkment from my flights. I could fit my camera, clothes, batteries,
and lights all in the same suitcase along with my tripod. It also became very easy to carry around by
hand. By folding it into such a compact
size I didn’t have to worry about bumping into things. I had full control of the compacted tripod as
it was about as long as a suitcase.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xHaXAETYn2M/V1FSDOwpRLI/AAAAAAAAaqw/POnQQPEzPSIHUfjKyDg7SyOBhHLXj8-GwCLcB/s1600/IMG_0024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xHaXAETYn2M/V1FSDOwpRLI/AAAAAAAAaqw/POnQQPEzPSIHUfjKyDg7SyOBhHLXj8-GwCLcB/s320/IMG_0024.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When fully
extended the tripod reached to a little over four and a half feet. I am around five foot nine inches, so when
shooting with it I have to bend over a little bit. However the one foot difference between
myself and the tripod is not enough to feel uncomfortable when lining up my
shots. It’s a good size, where if it
were a little shorter it would be unpleasant.
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The BeFree
tripod I purchased has an aluminum body that has stood up to every sort of
mistreatment I could give it. The body
weighs about three pounds which is a pretty light tripod, and I barely even
notice the weight on my day to day trips.
There is a<a href="http://amzn.to/20WWKTw" target="_blank"> carbon fiber version</a> that shaves off a little more weight,
however the aluminum body has been fine for me.
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KpbtutMNjA4/V1FSC4u1klI/AAAAAAAAaqs/bOBOIkfhseYlSujy9MZNmsAvJuRjBidmACLcB/s1600/IMG_0027.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KpbtutMNjA4/V1FSC4u1klI/AAAAAAAAaqs/bOBOIkfhseYlSujy9MZNmsAvJuRjBidmACLcB/s320/IMG_0027.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The legs
lock into two positions, either the standard 51 degree angle or a wider 25
degree angle. The wider angle allows for
better stability, and allows you to take shots of things closer to the
ground. The center column of the Befree
tripod is also reversible. This allows
you to get even closer to the ground by mounting your camera upside down on the
system. This is extremely handy for
Macro photography.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vc345-O7oB0/V1FSDHa2oEI/AAAAAAAAaq0/I6axRBOEqlYvg3p_9N1pUdFV5MMKWgy4ACLcB/s1600/IMG_0026.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vc345-O7oB0/V1FSDHa2oEI/AAAAAAAAaq0/I6axRBOEqlYvg3p_9N1pUdFV5MMKWgy4ACLcB/s320/IMG_0026.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The ball
head with a quick release mount takes advantage of Manfrotto’s RC2 plates. This offers a lot of versatility since it’s
such a common style quick release system.
The ball mount is controlled by tightening and releasing a wing
screw. This releases tension and allows
you to move the camera around to the position you want.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
<a href="http://amzn.to/1srukWL" target="_blank">Manfrotto’s BeFree</a> tripod offers
all the key features that their tripods are known for. The durability, portability, compactibility, and
ease of use make this probably the best tripod on the market for a photographer
that has to do a lot of traveling. Over
all I myself couldn’t be happier with owning this one and take it with me
almost everywhere.</div>

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Vk6yywcYm_Q/UyavT_oqNbI/AAAAAAAAYnE/HmhbK26SFbE/s1600/SP-1+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Vk6yywcYm_Q/UyavT_oqNbI/AAAAAAAAYnE/HmhbK26SFbE/s1600/SP-1+2.jpg" height="236" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Recently I’ve been looking to fill a missing piece in my life. That missing piece is unique to my situation, however there are probably other’s that are in the same situation as me. Those of us that need (as in must have) a portable traveler printer. I am a photographer and frequently find myself in exotic countries. There are times where I think to myself “I wish I could print this off and paste it in my journal.” or “I wish I could give this person a copy of this photograph I took to them, because chances are they’ll never find a computer in this area to see it on my website.”<br />
So I began the quest to find the perfect portable printer. Canon has their little Selphy series printers that spit out 4x6 images using an inkjet system. But I need something smaller because when you’re traveling with as much gear as I do then ever ounce and every inch matters. The focus of this article is to compare the three main printers I found, while introducing a surprise fourth choice at the end.<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0019UGCLG/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0019UGCLG&linkCode=as2&tag=fafo02-20">Polaroid CZA-20011B PoGo</a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=fafo02-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B0019UGCLG" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> </b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FUM7WoTefCk/UyavZ7ZSalI/AAAAAAAAYnM/rdPmu-j8xXc/s1600/21+vSrygdQL.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FUM7WoTefCk/UyavZ7ZSalI/AAAAAAAAYnM/rdPmu-j8xXc/s1600/21+vSrygdQL.jpg" /></a></div>
The first printer I found was the Polaroid PoGo. This is Polaroid’s attempt to bring instant pictures to the user. The device uses the zInk, Zero Ink, technology which allows you to print without working about a print cartridge. Since it uses the zInk the device is able to remain compact. zInk, for a lack of better explanation, uses chemistry and microcrystals that change the color of the paper when heat is applied. So the PoGo ends up being extremely compact. The PoGo can use PictBridge if you camera has that function, and can also receive images over Bluetooth. However iPhones do not allow you to send photos of Bluetooth, so you would need an Android phone, or a phone that allows Bluetooth sending. The biggest complaint people have with this printer is the quality. It is in no way designed to print professional photos, however the cost per print is extremely low making it overall the least expensive option.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IR44xrh4BvA/UyavfnQ87mI/AAAAAAAAYnU/3qyxmDFNtkk/s1600/MP-300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IR44xrh4BvA/UyavfnQ87mI/AAAAAAAAYnU/3qyxmDFNtkk/s1600/MP-300.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a><b>Fuji Pivi MP-300 </b><br />
This is the more advanced version of the Fuji Pivi. Previous models only had an infrared port on them so that you could send your photos to it via your infrared sensor on your phone. As this is mainly a feature for Asian phones and not western phones it didn’t have much of a market outside of Japan. The MP-300 still has the infrared sensor but also has a PictiBridge USB port on it. The best part about this printer is that it uses film paper very similar to old Polaroid cameras. The print will come out of the camera and then you wait for it to develop, and will no doubt probably shake the photo in hopes of it developing quicker.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-a3M_HCSXbfA/UyavoB-j3CI/AAAAAAAAYnc/89yoLK4wF2A/s1600/PD233.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-a3M_HCSXbfA/UyavoB-j3CI/AAAAAAAAYnc/89yoLK4wF2A/s1600/PD233.jpg" height="263" width="320" /></a></div>
<b><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EH9S8VI/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00EH9S8VI&linkCode=as2&tag=fafo02-20">LG PD233 Pocket Photo Printer</a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=fafo02-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00EH9S8VI" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></b>
<br />
This printer comes in two models, the PD233 and PD223. I read somewhere that the only real difference in the two is that the 233 was developed for the global market so has less compatibility issues. The PD233 uses the zInk technolgy, just like the PoGo. The PD233 has an App that can be downloaded for either iOS, or Android. The device does have a mini-USB port however this appears only to be useful for charging, not for Pictbridge or desktop support. The printer also comes in an assortment of colors, for those of you that want to accesorize your assories.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FEl6FpZ-CDg/UyavvEF3JaI/AAAAAAAAYnk/GjL56LjJ7tc/s1600/Share+SP-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FEl6FpZ-CDg/UyavvEF3JaI/AAAAAAAAYnk/GjL56LjJ7tc/s1600/Share+SP-1.jpg" height="320" width="221" /></a><b><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HYAL84Q/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HYAL84Q&linkCode=as2&tag=fafo02-20">Fujifilm Instax Share SP-1</a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=fafo02-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00HYAL84Q" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></b>
<br />
<span style="color: red;"> (Available in America June 1, 2014)</span><br />
Lastly after searching through the ends of the internet I finally decided to head to Japan’s largest electronic store, Yodabashi Camera, to see if they had anything I hadn’t found yet. The SP-1, much like the MP-300, uses film paper. The big difference in paper is that the SP-1 is using the Instax mini film, which is the same film that <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AWKJPPY/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00AWKJPPY&linkCode=as2&tag=fafo02-20">Instax</a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=fafo02-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00AWKJPPY" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> cameras are using. The SP-1 uses a smartphone app, and Wifi connectivity to send your photos to it’s printer. There are no USB ports on it, so you can rule out Pictbridge or computer printing. However if you’re willing to put your photos on your tablet or phone before printing then this is no problem.<br />
<br />
<b>Additional Notes: </b><br />
The zInk technology is pretty amazing, and also offers things like photo stickers. However if you want a true polaroid look to your photos then Fuji is the way to go. All the printers have the option of charging with an AC adapter, however some adapters are sold separately.<br />
If you’re trying to decide which is better, that’s all a matter of preference. I’ve decided to go with the Fuji Share since it’s the most recent and also prints off the polaroid style prints. The price per print is a little more expensive on the Fuji Share, however they are making enough <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AWKJPPY/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00AWKJPPY&linkCode=as2&tag=fafo02-20">Instax Mini Cameras</a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=fafo02-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00AWKJPPY" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> to ensure that their film will be around for a long time. Unfortunately none of the devices are versatile enough to offer every type of connectivity available, but that’s probably a good thing since it keeps the price down. Most of these cameras can be found on <a href="http://astore.amazon.com/fafo02-20?_encoding=UTF8&node=1" target="_blank">Amazon</a>, however the Fuji PIVI MP-300 doesn't seem to be available in the US.<br />

This week I'm bringing you a photo from our series "Dia De Obon". It was inspired by <a href="http://www.juliakuzmenko.com/" target="_blank">Julia Kuzmenko McKim's Sugar Skull series</a>. You can see hers on her <a href="http://www.juliakuzmenko.com/" target="_blank">site</a>.<br />
<center>
<a href="http://www.fantim.com/p345358316" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://www.fantim.com/img/s9/v92/p1730708113-4.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></center>
<br />
In the Japanese tradition of Obon families gather at cemetery and prepare the graves. During Obon season the dead can go home to visit their houses. So families prepare the grave sites and clean them up for their families return. During Obon they prepare an eggplant as a horse by putting sticks in it to represent four legs. The dead person uses this eggplant horse to ride to the families house. The family takes the eggplant home and then will later return it to the grave so that the dead can return to their resting place.<br />
On the Mexican holiday "Dia De Los Muertos" families go to the grave yards and decorate tombstones with deceased family members' favorite foods and candies. This is done in order to encourage them to return where they can spend time with family and hear prayers that will be taken back to heaven with them.<br />
There are a few similarities with these holidays that we wanted to explore, so we decided to merge them for this art piece.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Let's take a look at the images.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.fantim.com/p345358316" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://www.fantim.com/img/s9/v94/p1672874459-4.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Before</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
First thing I did on this image was smooth out the colors and add some accessories. I also modified the face shape on my model.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.fantim.com/p345358316" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://www.fantim.com/img/s9/v95/p1867767541-4.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Modified face shape, and smoothed skin</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
My next step was dodging and burning.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.fantim.com/p345358316" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://www.fantim.com/img/s9/v97/p1620471484-4.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">With dodging and burning</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
My final step was to add some color variations.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.fantim.com/p345358316" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://www.fantim.com/img/s9/v92/p1730708113-4.jpg" height="400" width="266" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Final Image</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So that was everything.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.fantim.com/p345358316" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://www.fantim.com/img/s9/v89/p1874010183-4.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Before and After</td></tr>
</tbody></table>

::Before And After::</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This week's photo idea came to me one night as I was falling asleep. I had an image slip into my head. Dressed in a business suit, floating through the clouds, buildings rising from below. It was a very peaceful dream, the kind of feeling you get right before you start dreaming.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I woke up and decided to create what I saw. It's not exactly as I saw it in my dream because I would've needed to rent a hot air balloon to get the angle on the buildings that would've been needed.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I decided to include a before and after of this week's photo.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Falling Man</td></tr>

For the falling man I modeled myself. We used the umbrellas and windows to create the light coming from in front of me. We also used the lights in my apartment to guarantee that my back wouldn't be too washed out. We tried using a fan at first to create the shirt flapping, but it wasn't strong enough so we ended up using string and photoshopping it out later.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So something interesting about working on this composition. During the time of this photo Japan and Russia are feuding over a few islands in Norther Japan. There was originally a sign on the building saying that once Japan reacquired these islands Japan would have peace. We decided to replace this with a custom haiku Risa Takeuchi wrote just for this photo.</div>

<br />
So this weeks twisted princess was Snow White. My idea for it was that once she bit into the poison apple you would see the effects of the poison, starting at the mouth. <br />
My original concept was to have this shot in the studio with a white background. But once I started editing the outdoor shot I ended up liking it better than the studio shot.<br />
One thing that disappointed me was that I didn't have my reflector with me at the time of shooting the image. I've been packing and moving around alot lately so I had no idea where I had left it. If I had it I could've used it to create a great catch light which would've helped out alot while darkening the eyes.<br />
I'm so grateful to <a href="http://www.filmreadyface.com/" target="_blank">FilmReadyFace</a> for providing the makeup, and <a href="http://www.modelmayhem.com/2431442" target="_blank">Lace</a> for making a special trip to Nashville just to shoot this shot for me.<br />

<div>
So on my way home from a wedding I shot last weekend I decided to take a detour. I tried to go to the Davy Crockett museum in Tennessee, but ended up getting tired of the drive. It gave me a good chance to scout though on the way and stop at places I wanted to on the way back.<br />
This was one place I decided to stop at. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.fantim.com/img/s11/v35/p917988607-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://www.fantim.com/img/s11/v35/p917988607-4.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Original Image</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
I got up and close and personal with this building; the shattered windows and wind blown sheets hanging over the windows made it more eerie than I wanted to face by myself. As I approached he building I expected to see shadowy figures run past the holes in the plywood covering the door, or see the face of a witch in the window pointing at me and grinning. <br />
I decided not to enter the building because I noticed alot of modern things around it and feared that either someone still lived there or that the owner came by frequently and would arrest me for trespassing. After all the wheat farm in front of the building had been cut not too long ago.</div>
<div>
So instead I ran into the field and took three photos so that I could start my image by making an HDR photo.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.fantim.com/img/s11/v29/p812536845-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://www.fantim.com/img/s11/v29/p812536845-4.jpg" width="320" /></a></td><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.fantim.com/img/s11/v33/p1064830352-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://www.fantim.com/img/s11/v33/p1064830352-4.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Same Image -1</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Same Image +1</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
I put all three images together in Photomatix and came up with this HDR:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.fantim.com/img/s11/v37/p333392572-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://www.fantim.com/img/s11/v37/p333392572-4.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Rendered HDR image</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
It was not bad but still needed some work. So I imported it into Photoshop. I removed my car and the building behind it, along with the electric pole and wires. I then adjusted the levels for the sky and trees, then adjusted the levels on the building, and lastly adjusted the levels on the grass.<br />
Lately I've been driving around and staring at all the birds migrating. For some reason I've been very fascinated by them this year. I've been wanting to add them to a photo so I chose to add them to this photo. Lastly I added some sun rays in the sky and put a gradient around the edges. And I was finished. Pretty easy photo to do, but I love the way it turned out.</div>
<div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.fantim.com/img/s11/v33/p318217678-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://www.fantim.com/img/s11/v33/p318217678-4.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>

So this week I've decided to add a before and after shoot from my Halloween Vampire shoot.<br />
My first step in post processing was I made a copy of the raw image and increased the brightness. I then put it into Photoshop and combined the lighter image with the darker image. <br />
While adding makeup to the image we had decided to put a little drop on the top of her teeth to look like blood, but while I was working on this image I ended up removing that in order to make her teeth stand out more. After basic touchups, and dodging and burning I took a white brush and created more light coming out of the lantern. For a final touch I created a drop of blood and made it a similar color to the lips. <br />
Some level and color adjustments later and you have the final image.<br />

<a href="http://fantim.com/52-11">FANTiM.COM/52-11</a><br />
<br />
So my plan this year was to take a different Halloween photo every week. Unfortunately there were complications with this plan. So instead I did two weeks. Still I think they turned out great.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Vampire Shoot</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
For my vampire shoot I put together a very creative team and the photo turned out perfectly. The original didn't look much different then the end product.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Zombie Shoot</td></tr>

My other Halloween shoot was zombie themed. This shot was inspired by "The Witch" from the left for dead series. The red lighting on her dress was a mix of photoshop and a red glow stick. <br />

In tradition to my recent blog on baby photos I found another gem to share with everyone. I don't know who's luckier, the mom or the photographer who caught this shot. :P<br />

I have a shoot coming up with a new born baby and her parents. This was actually supposed to be a pregnant shoot however the night of the photo shoot the baby was born.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Top 3 Classics</span><br />Anyways, here are the top 3 "classics" that I'm planning on staying away from.<br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">3. Out of Control Family</span><br />What better way to capture your family than in their natural environment. Might as well take your kids to Walmart and have one lying on the ground throwing a temper tantrum over not getting the toy they want, while the other is walking back holding onto a Walmart employee cause they couldn't find you, and your baby cries uncontrollably while you look at pajama bottoms.<br /><a href="http://www.fulleredgeportraits.com/data/photos/89_1family033.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 436px; height: 266px;" src="http://www.fulleredgeportraits.com/data/photos/89_1family033.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br />I'm not a big fan of this style because although it captures the natural energy of the family it leaves a sense of non-unity. The family aspect kind of goes out the door when you're loving your baby and let your other kids run rampant.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">2. The Naked Family</span><br />There's something about a family that get naked with their baby that just doesn't appeal to my style of photography.<br /><img style="width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="http://proudtointroduce.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/family-portrait-with-four-month-old-baby.jpg" /><br />I think this style is supposed to be very raw, sweet, minimalistic, or something like that. But it tends to just look strange to me. Maybe it's cause I don't have kids and don't realize how fun it is to get naked with them.<br /><img src="http://www.evrimicoz.com/Blog/connor2.jpg" /><br />But shouldn't there be a line not to cross here? For example...<br /><img src="http://mtphotoarts.com/root/mtphotoarts/iphoto/photos/images1/prvFamily%20Portrait.jpg" /><br />So yeah this style just comes across as creepy to me.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">1. Breast Feeding Mom</span><br />Can you imagine being an adult, going to your parents house with your significant other, and seeing this on the wall?<br /><img style="width: 395px; height: 406px;" src="http://waynewallace.com/blog/uploaded_images/baby_portrait-1-WEB-739100.jpg" /><br />I have no problem with breast feeding. You're combining two great things, food and boobs. But is that something that needs to be captured? If my mom had kept pictures of me breast feeding lying around the house I think I would've been traumatized.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Some Good Ideas</span><br />Since I used these poor photographers pictures as references for what I don't want to do on my next shoot I thought I'd include a few shots of theirs that I do enjoy.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;"><a href="http://www.evrimgallery.com/">The Loving Embrase</a> </span>from "<span style="font-style: italic;">Naked dad squeezes naked baby too hard</span>" photographer<br /><img style="width: 410px; height: 280px;" src="http://www.evrimgallery.com/Portland-Wedding-Photographer/portland-baby-photographer-01.jpg" /><br />I love the emotion in this photograph. The editing style too ads alot to that by bringing about detail in the subjects and the baby's eyes.<br /><br /><a href="http://proudtointroduce.com/"><span style="font-weight:bold;">Smiling Baby is a Happy Baby</span></a> from "<span style="font-style: italic;">naked African American family cuddles</span>" photographer<br /><img style="width: 404px; height: 275px;" src="http://proudtointroduce.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/1-year-photo-session-wauwatosa-photography.jpg" /><br />Everyone loves pictures of smiling babies, and capturing that can at times be a challenge for a photographer. But the results are so good and you can't help smile when you see a baby smiling.<br /><br /><a href="http://mtphotoarts.com/"><span style="font-weight:bold;">Hands Hands Everywhere</span></a> from "<span style="font-style: italic;">naked families cuddle no matter how old your kid is" </span>photographer<br /><img src="http://mtphotoarts.com/root/mtphotoarts/iphoto/photos/images1/prvNewborn%20Baby%20Portrait%202.jpg" /><br />I have to admit this photographer had more maternity pictures that I liked than their baby pictures. But you can never go wrong with hands. They give a sense of just how tiny the child is. Including grandparents can also show a good contrast between the generations.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.fulleredgeportraits.com/"><span style="font-weight:bold;">The Lomo Shot</span> </a>from "<span style="font-style: italic;">do what you want kids, this is only photo shoot is only costing me an arm and a leg</span>" photographer<br /><img style="width: 418px; height: 255px;" src="http://www.fulleredgeportraits.com/data/photos/239_1r187.jpg" /><br />I love this shot. The natural nature of the shot, the low contrast, the backlight, the lens flare. And at the same time the subjects are doing what they do naturally. It's such a peaceful and great capture.<br /><br /><a href="http://gallery.me.com/wallacephotobiz"><span style="font-weight:bold;">The Classic Movie Shot</span></a> from "<span style="font-style: italic;">baby hungry!</span>" photographer<br /><img style="width: 404px; height: 217px;" src="http://waynewallace.com/blog/uploaded_images/baby_portrait-3-WEB-767498.jpg" /><br />Using brokeh along with creative cropping makes images like this very cool. There's not alot of posing in pictures like this, and that's a good thing because it allows the photographer to capture the natural characteristics of the subjects in the photograph.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">Here are a couple other shots that I really liked too.</span><br /><br /><a href="http://www.bambooshootsphoto.com/"><span style="font-weight:bold;">The Sleeper</span></a><br /><img style="width: 407px; height: 270px;" src="http://www.bambooshootsphoto.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Pasadena-Glendale-Los-Angeles-newborn-baby-family-portrait-photography-Burbank-Long-Beach-Pomona-Torrance-1.jpg" /><br />A quick capture through the bars of the crib. If you think about it the only thing visible of the baby in this picture is the baby's head. Yet the environment captures something we're all used to seeing babies in and captures that artistically.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.marko.fi/"><span style="font-weight:bold;">The Family Portrait</span></a><br />I thought I'd end with this one, just to get a smile out of you.<br /><img src="http://teenymanolo.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/marko-rantanen-family-portrait.jpg" /><br />I actually love this shot. Yes the little girl looks like she's planning on eating your soul, but besides that it's very classy and entertaining.<br /><br />::UPDATE::<br />A buddy of mine sent me this one.<br /><a href="http://tosh.comedycentral.com/blog/files/2011/07/tumblr_loaveqLcMl1qe0wclo1_500.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 499px; height: 307px;" src="http://tosh.comedycentral.com/blog/files/2011/07/tumblr_loaveqLcMl1qe0wclo1_500.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><div class="blogger-post-footer">Be sure to check out my <a href="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/p354468443">52 Projects page</a> and you can also find me on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/7906561@N06/">Flickr.</a>

<br />
<br />
So today's image that we'll be looking at is the image that inspired my Catwoman photo shoot. It all started out when I saw the cover of this particular Catwoman comic book.<br />
<img src="http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs32/f/2008/193/b/2/Catwoman_Cover_51_by_AdamHughes.jpg" /><br />
This was the original art work, by Adam Hughes. A mugshot of Catwoman.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://fantim.com/img/v11/p1013862861-4.jpg" /><br />
This is my remake of the image. Now for some behind the scenes so you can have an idea of the post processing.<br />
<img src="http://fantim.com/p960902693/e2dc3a538" /><br />
I had my model dowse herself with water for this image in order to get that just got arrested in the rain look. I actually used several different images and composed them together in order to get every piece of her in place. After the shoot I went through and redarkened the running mascara. Cropped it in tight, and made the mugshot sign by drawing it together on Photoshop. Had to draw the mugshot sign because I didn't want to spend the money to buy one. <br />
To see some more visit <a href="http://fantim.com/catwoman">http://fantim.com/catwoman</a><br />
<br />
Here are some behind the scene shots.<br />
<img src="http://fantim.com/img/v9/p572889224-3.jpg" /><br />
Due to a double booking error in my studio I had to move my studio upstairs to this dining hall. Although I didn't have as much lighting control it was free and I got the shots I wanted.<br />
<br />
<img src="http://fantim.com/img/v1/p887796684-3.jpg" /><br />
Catwoman getting ready to go rob some stuff. :D<br />
<br />
That's all for now.<br />

Since I don't actually have an infrared camera I am using my regular camera, and keeping the shutter open for a long period of time. <BR> In return the technique is almost like taking a night photo, except the shot was taken during the day. The affect is always pretty interesting.<BR> <br />As I play around with it more I assume I'll be able to understand the variables better and get a better image next time. But still pretty fun for my first attempt. I stood in the frame long enough for the image to pick me up, then I moved.<BR><br />I'm not exactly sure why half of the frame is darker than the other, could've been a solar flare, or perhaps was a result to the way I shuttered it. I ended up cranking up my ISO (Film) speed pretty high in order to capture the image easier.<BR>T<div class="blogger-post-footer">Be sure to check out my <a href="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/p354468443">52 Projects page</a> and you can also find me on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/7906561@N06/">Flickr.</a>

I just desaturated some of the color and adjusted my blacks. I like the way it turned it.<BR><br />This was my first time using my new studio, so I was pretty excited about it. And loved the amount of control I had in the studio.<BR><br />At one point though I accidentally shut the dressing room door, with all of Adam's cloths in it. Six o'clock seemed way to early to wake up and take photos. Especially after working at a wedding the night before. But as they say "When in Tokyo.." So we arrived at the building where we were going to watch practice after roaming the streets for a while. I walked up to the door and tried to open it, but it was locked. After walking around the building a few times we could hear sumo sounds from one of the windows. "What exactly is 'sumo sounds'?" you ask? It is the sound of raw meat slapping into raw meat at the speed of a football player. <BR><br />We went back to the front where I rung the doorbell. The lock turned and the door slid open a crack, but no one looked out at us. So we opened the door and walked in. <BR><br />We were given designated spots where we were forced to sit. We watched the practice matches, and all the training exercises the wrestlers went through. It was pretty amazing to see such large guys moving so fast. At one point I tried to move to get a better shot. I stayed near my designated spot, but scooted over a little to an unoccupied area. I was immediately yelled at by a sumo wrestler looking guy in sweat clothes to "please sit down" *translated from Japanese*. Embarassed I quickly sat down.<BR><br />All in all an amazing experiences. I think patience allows us to become stagnant, and not strive to do anything better. How is that virtuous?<br />Actually I completely understand how patience is a virtue, but I think we also need to be willing to go out and try to get what we want, instead of waiting for it to come to us. I think lately this has been a problem of mine. I've felt like I need to go out and get something, but I have felt stuck and unable to get anywhere that I need to go.<BR><BR><br />So I decided this is the last time I'm going to publish a 52 picture on here. From now on they can be viewed on my <a href="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/p354468443">website</a>. But I will continue to use this space to post other pictures, as well as post before and after shots from my 52 Project.<BR><br />So be sure to check out my <a href="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/p354468443">52 Projects page</a> and you can also find me on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/7906561@N06/">Flickr.</a><div class="blogger-post-footer">Be sure to check out my <a href="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/p354468443">52 Projects page</a> and you can also find me on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/7906561@N06/">Flickr.</a>

So this week you get two photos.<BR><br /><img src="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/img/v4/p790434272-3.jpg"><BR><br /><br />In Good Health 52/8<BR><br /><br />I was sick this week, and the photo I was originally working on didn't work out. So instead I decided to upload a photo of myself.<br /><br /><BR>BEFORE:<BR><img src="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/img/v7/p382998056-3.jpg"><BR>I didn't actually take the photo when I was sick, but as you can see I did edit it a bit. Mostly bought out my eyes, and got rid of a few skin imperfections. I also changed the color to the weird green, most likely because I was feeling green myself.<BR><BR><br /><img src="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/img/v8/p530112656-3.jpg"><BR>52/9 Take Time to Check the Time<BR><br />So this is my ninth 52 photo. I can't believe how fast this is going. By doing a project every week I can see exactly how fast time ticks by. It feels like just a few weeks ago I was starting my first photo. So today I'm posting a photo which was actually an idea for next weeks photo. I like the way this turned out though, so this is what you get for today's photo.<BR><BR>Now onto last (last) week's photo, and the edits I used.<BR><br />Kinda Before:<BR><img src="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/img/v6/p804085266-3.jpg"><BR>So this image is pretty much all photoshop. I took the picture of myself as a luchador, and also took the picture of myself as the poor guy about to get pounded. I then added them to a wrestling ring which I made out of an image, and alot of vector art, and put the crowd background to it.<BR><img src="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/img/v1/p997403325-3.jpg"><BR>Instead of actually jumping in the area I took a picture of myself doing a back arch, then flipped it upside down. And I got what I was looking for.<BR>AFTER:<BR><img src="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/img/v6/p1014246551-3.jpg"><BR><BR>So yeah that's how I did that photo.<br /><BR>So I know this was a long post, but hope you guys liked it. Please leave me a comment, no matter where you're reading this blog.<BR><br />Until next time<BR><img src="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/img/v0/p984168633-3.jpg"><div class="blogger-post-footer">Be sure to check out my <a href="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/p354468443">52 Projects page</a> and you can also find me on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/7906561@N06/">Flickr.</a>

So that's one thing I had to add in photoshop, not only that but I also added the hose coming out of the gas mask.</p><p><br><a href="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/p354468443"><img alt="" src="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/img/v4/p551343561-3.jpg"></a></p><p>Being the shy boy I am I wore a pair of shorts when I sat on the toilet, just incase there were any slip ups. I then edited the lens curve in photoshop to make my upper body look much larger than my legs, in order to bring more of a focus on my face. After adding a few affects and color changes I was finished.</p><p>AFTER:</p><p><a href="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/p354468443"><img alt="" src="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/img/v4/p980465261-3.jpg"></a><br></p><div class="blogger-post-footer">Be sure to check out my <a href="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/p354468443">52 Projects page</a> and you can also find me on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/7906561@N06/">Flickr.</a>

I started out by painting my face. This took a long time to do, mainly cause the kabuki picture I was using as a reference was in a different room, so I kept running in between rooms to paint my face.<br /><img alt="" src="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/img/v4/p1010537416-3.jpg" /><br />This is half way through the makeup<br /><img alt="" src="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/img/v4/p42441941-3.jpg" /><br />And just for reference this is what I looked like before the makeup<br /><img alt="" src="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/img/v5/p460962416-3.jpg" /><br />So finally I finished putting on all the makeup.<br /><img alt="" src="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/img/v6/p914242780-3.jpg" /><br />Then I did my photo shoot. Here's a before and after of the photo.<br />BEFORE:<br /><img alt="" src="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/img/v6/p775152614-3.jpg" /><br />AFTER:<br /><img alt="" src="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/img/v4/p1020102774-3.jpg" /><br />So as you can see I turned the photo upside down and added some editing. Ok hope you guys liked it.<br />For more from the 52 Series click <a href="http://www.fantim.com/?id=http://fantim.zenfolio.com/p354468443/e3ccd8876" target="_top">here</a>.<br /><div class="blogger-post-footer">Be sure to check out my <a href="http://fantim.zenfolio.com/p354468443">52 Projects page</a> and you can also find me on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/7906561@N06/">Flickr.</a>
